Sherlock Bones and the Missing Cheese by Susan Stevens Crummel

Crummel, Susan Stevens. Sherlock Bones and the Missing Cheese. New York: Two Lions, 2012. 38p.

Sherlock Bones is on the case when the characters in the dell realize the smelly cheese made by the cantankerous cow is missing!  Sherlock Bones interviews the farmer's wife, the cat, the rat and the muffin man about what they heard, smelled and felt. He records all of his clues as he gathers them in his little black book. The dog detective explains to the reader how he was able to crack the case using his five senses.  The layered cut paper illustrations compliment the rhyming text and the mystery is sure to be a favorite read aloud. Use this book for an introducing into the mystery genre, as a read aloud to accompany a unit on the five senses or to build phonemic awareness with students.  Sheet music for the original story of the Farmer in the Dell is available at the end of the book.
