An elderly king with no children of his own comes up with a brilliant plan to name his successor. He hands each of the potential sucessors a seed and asks them to come back with what they've grown in six months. Jack, a young boy and farmer's son, lines up behind many fierce knights to receive his seed. After caring for it every day, he is unable to make the seed sprout. When Jack returns to the king's castle with just a seed, he is dismayed to find the knights holding beautifully healthy flowers. As Jack discovers the king's secret, however, he learns that honesty truly is the best policy.
Engaging text, vibrant illustrations and a memorable moral make this book perfect for character education discussions. Jack's earnest attempts to nurture the seed would also connect well with science discussions on requirements for plant growth.
