Look, Lenore. Alvin Ho: Allergic to Girls, School and Other Scary Things. New York: Schwartz & Wade, 2008. 172p.
Alvin Ho, a bright middle child who is about to begin second grade, is afraid of EVERYTHING! This first book in the series begins with a list of Alvin's fears. Alvin soon explains that although he is able to speak perfectly well at home, he gets so scared at school that he is "as silent as a side of beef." After making himself a Personal Disaster Kit, Alvin soon seeks advice from his older brother Calvin, who helps Alvin develop a hilarious list of tips for making friends. Alvin's adventures continue with a plot to catch chicken pox to get out of school, piano lessons gone wrong, and a trip to a "psychotherapist," a term which Alvin defines in an extremely funny way!
"Alvin Ho's Woeful Glossary" at the end of the book (where he provides laugh-out-loud definitions for terms used in the story) and author Lenore Look's hysterical writing style make this book an outstanding selection for a variety of purposes. Use it as a captivating read-aloud, an independent reading selection or a mentor text for developing characters or writing with voice. You'll be glad you did!
