In this prequel to the classic The Keeping Quilt, Polacco tells the story of her great-grandmother's life before she came to America. As a child in Russia in the early 1900s, Anna can't understand why her family is ordered to leave their home. One of the few possessions her family takes as they leave is a beautiful tea set her parents received as a wedding present. A note with the set says, "This tea set is magic. Anyone who drinks from it has a blessing from God." Anna's family endures many hardships and they leave the set behind as they travel to America. Anna's mother keeps one cup so they "can still have its blessing." Polacco fans will appreciate this newest addition to her works.
