Modesitt, Jeanne. The Story of Z. Saxonville: Picture Book Studio, 1990. 32p.
The letter Z is tired of being last in the alphabet and decides to leave. After unsuccessfully attempting to start her own alphabet, Z later discovers how valuable she really is.
This is a great book for demonstrating how every letter makes a sound and is important within words. For older grades, it is an excellent book for defining words in context. Vocabulary words such as "mutinty," "recruit," and "commotion" can all be defined using context clues while reading.
