Broach, Elise. Shakespeare's Secret. New York: Henry Holt and Company, 2005. 256 p.
Sixth grader Hero, named after a Shakespearean character, moves into a new house and is once again forced to adjust to a new school. While socializing is easy for her older sister, Hero has a difficult time making friends and is teased in her classes. She soon finds solace in friendships with her elderly neighbor and an older neighborhood boy. This endearing trio embarks on a quest to find a missing diamond that is rumored to be hidden on Hero's property and could be the key to Shakespeare's true identity. While investigating this historical mystery, they also discover some shocking truths about the connections they share and the ties that bind them together.
This is a wonderful book for historical fiction fans, readers who enjoy mysteries, late elementary school and early middle school students who are trying to navigate their own social situations, and anyone who has ever fantasized about the mysteries that may lie within his/her own yard or neighborhood.
