The Reinvention of Edison Thomas by Jacqueline Houtman

Houtman, Jacqueline. The Reinvention of Edison Thomas. Honesdale, Pennsylvania: Boyds Mills Press, 2010. 199p.

Eddy Thomas is a brilliant inventor who is bullied by his middle school peers. Although he has an outstanding scientific mind, he has trouble understanding social situations and paying attention in class. While trying to win a science fair and invent a solution to a neighborhood problem, Eddie learns valuable lessons about the true nature of friendship.

This is a well-written, touching book. As readers enjoy the story, they will also learn many fascinating facts from the impressive "Random Access Memory of Edison Thomas" and will begin to understand Asperger's Syndrome from Eddy's point of view. This book is an excellent choice for helping teachers learn more about Asperger's and for helping students develop empathy, an appreciation of differences, and a desire to become an ally instead of a bully or bystander. Teachers: If you decide to use this book as a read-aloud, please be aware of a conversation on pages 112-113 that you may want to skip over or alter slightly for elementary audiences.
