Each Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson

Woodson, Jacqueline. Each Kindness. New York: Nancy Paulsen Books, 2012. 32p.

Chloe (the narrator) and her friends shun Maya, a new girl in their class who wears secondhand clothes and has less expensive, simpler toys than they do. Maya keeps reaching out to Chloe for friendship but is repeatedly rejected. When Maya and her family move away, Chloe reflects on her teacher's valuable lesson on kindness and wishes she had treated Maya much differently.

This is an engrossing, heart-wrenching book that will remain with readers forever. The story, and the teacher's stone-dropped-in-water activity showing that kindness has a ripple effect, are exceptional additions to character education lessons on kindness.
