Willems, Mo. I'm a Frog! New York: Hyperion Books, 2013. 32p.
In the latest book of the Elephant & Piggie series, Piggie pretends to be a frog while Gerald (the elephant) looks on in confusion. When Gerald starts to worry about his friend's transformation, Piggie explains what it means to pretend. Will Gerald ever stop worrying and join the fun?
Like the other outstanding selections in this early reader series, this book is filled with humor that kids of all ages (and adults!) will love. It's an excellent choice for practicing fluency, expression and word recognition (due to the repetition of many words and phrases throughout the book). For upper elementary grades, books in the Elephant & Piggie series could be studied as mentor texts. Mo Willems makes many important decisions about punctuation, font size and the use of capitalized or italicized letters to direct readers to read his text a certain way.
Manushkin, Fran. Katie Woo: Katie Saves the Earth. North Mankato: Picture Window Books, 2013. 32p.
In this beginning chapter book, Katie Woo comes up with an idea to help save the Earth. Although her idea doesn't work out exactly according to plan, she learns about reuse while making a thoughtful decision.
Katie Woo series fans will delight in this adventure as they gain confidence in their reading skills through word repetition in the text. The book's glossary, discussion questions, writing prompts and writing activities lend themselves well to guided reading lessons (level H) or classroom environment discussions.

Chaconas, Dori. Cork & Fuzz: No Fooling. New York: Penguin Young Readers, 2012. 32p.
Fuzz, a tall possum who loves adventure, convinces his friend Cork, a short muskrat who prefers safety, to follow animal tracks in the snow with him. When the tracks lead to an unexpected animal, Cork must be brave to save his friend. This early chapter book contains a gentle friendship story with frequent word repetition and a humorous climax in which readers will recognize the animal that Cork and Fuzz do not.
Bell, Cece. Rabbit & Robot: The Sleepover. Somerville: Candlewick Press, 2012. 50p.
In this early chapter book, Rabbit prepares a list of activities for his sleepover with Robot. Although he is initially upset when the activities don't go as planned, Rabbit soon learns that friendship requires a bit of compromise and understanding. A silly story with an important message, this book will be an amusing selection for young readers!
