One for the Murphys by Lynda Mullaly Hunt

Hunt, Lynda Mullaly. One for the Murphys. New York: Nancy Paulsen Books, 2012.

Carley Connors has been placed in foster care after a life-changing altercation with her mom and stepfather. When she moves in with seemingly perfect Julie Murphy, Julie's firefighter, Red-Sox-fanatic husband and their three rambunctious boys, Carley discovers a whole new world. She begins to learn about stereotypes, love, friendship and the person she hopes to be. As her mom starts recovering, though, Carley has to make tough decisions about who she is and where she really belongs.

Have tissues ready for this memorable, moving story that is an excellent choice for character development units and for discussions on the effects of stereotypes.
