Noah Webster & His Words by Jeri Chase Ferris

Ferris, Jeri Chase. Noah Webster & His Words. New York: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2012. 32p.

In this picture book biography, a confident young Noah Webster grows up to be a teacher and an author who unites the newly-independent American colonies by writing the first books on American spelling, grammar and history before ultimately penning the first American dictionary. Throughout the biography, important words are presented as dictionary entries with their syllables, parts of speech and definitions presented to readers.

This is a fascinating selection for social studies units on the birth of our nation, language arts classes (especially when paired with the chapter book Frindle by Andrew Clements), and character education discussions on determination and goal-setting.
