Malcolm at Midnight by W.H. Beck

Beck, W.H. Malcolm at Midnight. New York: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2012. 265p.

Malcolm, a pet rat in Mr. Binney's fifth grade class, befriends two students while trying to prove to the Midnight Academy (a secret society of school pets) that he is not responsible for the disappearance of the Academy's leader. This funny, engaging mystery involves deceit, romance, adventure, laugh-out-loud humor, suspense and a main character's quest to determine his purpose in life... all of which add up to a memorable tale that will keep students hooked!
Written from the perspective of a fifth grade student, this book also contains many outstanding vocabulary words defined in footnotes. An excellent choice for independent reading or a class read-aloud!
