School of Fear by Gitty Daneshvari

Daneshvari, Gitty. School of Fear. New York: Little, Brown and Company, 2009. 339p.

Four children, each with his/her own unique phobia, are accepted into the School of Fear, where they are expected to conquer their fears in six weeks or less. Under the direction of zany Mrs. Wellington, the children are subjected to a very odd curriculum with many surprises along the way! This thrilling story, filled with plenty of dry humor and imagination, will be an enticing independent reading selection for strong third and fourth grade readers. A fear listed and defined at the beginning of each chapter (Example: "Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia is the fear of long words") adds to the fun, and the use of many sophisticated words throughout the book make it wonderful for vocabulary acquisition.

Fans of this book will want to read the next two in the trilogy: Class is Not Dismissed and The Final Exam.
