The Truth of Me by Patricia MacLachlan

MacLachlan, Patricia. The Truth of Me. New York: Harper Collins. 2013. 114p.

Robbie's parents are muscians that travel for the summer. He worries that his parents love their music more than they love him.  Robbie and his dog get to spend this summer at his grandmother Maddy's house.  Maddie makes Robbie's parents nervous, especially when she tells special stories about how animals in the wild come right up to her.  Maddy and her friend Henry help Robbie find "the truth of me."  After an accident in the woods, Maddy reveals the reason why Robbie's mother is so remote.  Robby learns many new truths about himself and is able to reach out to his mother and make things right. This would be a great read aloud and could prompt a discussion about accepting our "small truths."
