Don't Wake the Bear! by Steve Smallman

Smallman, Steve. Don't Wake the Bear! New York: Cartwheel Books, 2012. 32p.

In this rhyming book that begs to be read aloud, animals are excitedly preparing for their annual Spring Party Day but grow fearful when they discover a hibernating bear nearby. When a popped balloon finally wakes Bear, the animals are surprised to learn that he is not angry; instead, he is grateful for the opportunity to make new friends! Students will adore this story and its illustrations, especially if they are encouraged to predict the rhyming words out loud!

The downside of this book is its noticeable similarity to Karma Wilson's Bear series (especially Bear Snores On). For fun, rhyming Bear tales covering multiple seasons, check out her Bear series here
